Through our parent group, Seprod via the Seprod Foundation, A.S. Bryden & Sons Trinidad Limited hosted an “Hour of Code” at San Juan Presbyterian School on Tuesday 6th December 2022 for 75 students between the ages of 8-12.
"The Hour of Code is a global movement introducing tens of millions of students worldwide to computer science, inspiring kids to learn more, breaking stereotypes, leaving them feeling empowered". It is hosted during Computer Literacy Week which is celebrated 5th – 12th December.
The Team from Brydens was led by Imanuel Gittens - E-Commerce Manager along with volunteers Janelle Emmanuel - Human Resources Manager, Keston Quow – Marketing Manager, Food & Grocery Division, Chevaughn Wellington – Administrative Assistant Hardware & Housewares Division and coordinated by Janine Rajah-Medford, Group Corporate Affairs Manager – The Brydens Group.
The kids were introduced to an “unplugged” graph paper coding technique followed by a do-it-yourself activity that was conducted in groups of four. The session was interactive and the children were quite enthusiastic about showing their understanding of the concepts.
To close the session, each child was presented with a certificate of participation followed by treats from Chocolisto and Bon Ice Cream.
The children were encouraged to check out HourOfCode.com, a site that offers hundreds of one-hour activities in over 48 languages for kindergarten and up. Activities require no experience and are accessible on browsers, tablets, and smartphones – some do not require any devices.
The Company plans to make this an annual event and hopes to collaborate with more schools in the future.
